LA FEMME NIKITA
As far back as Nikita can remember she was always dancing, whether it be twirling, jumping, or, just simply brushing the air with her arms. Her love of dance was ever-present.
She officially enrolled in private ballet classes at the age of seven, at the Gauvreau School of Performing Arts in Sudbury, Ontario. At this time, this was her first stage production, a solo performance. From this,
moment on she knew this was what she wanted to become.
Nikita later moved to the highly reputable Ida Sauves Dance Studios to study modern dance, jazz, acro and pointe.
During this tenure, the studio participated in the Kiwanis Festival, were the
studio won first prize for a modern performance and demi-character ballet.
Fate would play a interesting role as she was dancing as a Egyptian slave.
The first time, she wore harem pants, and not the last! Nikita also had the
honour of being interviewd and invited to audition for National Ballet of
Canada at the age of eleven.
So, how did a classically trained dancer
with dreams of joining a modern troupe become a bellydancer? It all
started with James Bond!!!!! When Nikita was a young girl, she would watch
movies with her father. In two of the Bond movies, From Russia with Love and
Diamonds are Forever, she saw the glittery, gypsy, and cabaret styles of
the true showgirl dance ever, Raks Shaki!!!!
In her teensNikita tried escape her Vaudvillian
ancestory and left dance and the stage to explore a normal teenage life.Realizing that life was not fulfilling without dance, she enrolled in a belly dance class. She soon met Tracey "Halyma" Vilbert, who would later teach her more about belly dance than just dancing. Denise Enan, thereafter, taught her classical Egyptian dance. Through the "Belly Dancing For Fun" ensemble, Nikita has been given wonderful opportunities such as performing on televison, assiting in workshops, and dancing in a array of different style venues.
The Ottawa community has provided Nikita with the fortunate opportunity to work and study with the most talented dancers. Nikita has also participated in workshops with Natalie Lebel
, Hadia, Azzia, and Deliha.
In the summer of 2007 Nikita returned to her classical
roots and completed a teachers workshop at the National Ballet of Canada. Here
she studied with such amazing talents as Peggy Baker, Soriella Englund and many
other variuos musicians and instructors.
To Nikita, dance has always been a
true expression of the soul. Dare to join? |
